Hello Kitty Lantern Festival

You know it’s going to be another Hello Kitty Hellish day when an email with photos like this arrives – the Hello Kitty lantern festival:

The second my wife saw these photos, she wanted to go. My mentioning that since the photos were posted online, it probably meant that the festival was already over (hoping beyond hope that this would somehow end the subject) didn’t dissuade her in the least bit (nothing dissuades a Hello Kitty fanatic once the Hello Kitty virus has entered their brain).

The unfortunate state of reality is that Hello Kitty is succeeding in taking over the world and it probably won’t be impossible to find another Hello Kitty lantern festival (just realizing this already has me more than a bit queasy). So I get to look forward to searching for Hello Kitty lantern festivals as part of my winter holiday. That certainly seems to perfectly sum up Hello Kitty Hell…

Sent in by kittysweet (via vkeong.com) who should suffer unspeakable torture for not only for thinking sending this to me was a good idea in any way, shape or form, but also for having a username that should definitely not be visiting this blog making it all the worse.

  1. Great news – not! It’s on until 31 December – way to go for NYE!

Maybe the crocodile and cheetah lanterns will devour the kitty-cat lanterns ha ha

  2. HKH man… if its any consolation to you, Hello Kitty is NOT taking over the world. I just became obsessed with her last year, and she is becoming increasingly UNPOPULAR here in Canada. You used to be able to get HK merchandise at a couple of stores and now only one carries it (just Claire’s.) Its still over-priced and crappy as hell, but its the one store that sells it. I hear many Sanrio stores are closing all over the US too. I think your fears are for the most part, unfounded… she is definitely dominating Japan though. I wouldn’t be surprised if Hello Kitty became an official religion in Japan eventually.

  3. K, I believe that must be (Dear) Daniel – HK’s male friend.
I admit I went to the Sanrio site to remind me and found the approaching Kitty who greets you on opening disturbing – the off the shoulder top and boots…

There’s prob more on these lantern festivals on the site linked to – seems lantern festivals/carnivals are a regular occurrence.

egads, just seen a ceramic diamond watch on there – $2900!

  4. If it weren’t for the hello kitty aspect, they would be really pretty lanterns. What makes me shake my head is how something lovely can instantly be turned into kitsch by HK. 🙁
