Remember "PeeWee's Playhouse"? He had his portrait in beans hanging on the wall of the playhouse. It also has a long and colorful history. Recently my daughter and I read "Red Scarf Girl", a memoir of a horrible childhood spent during the Cultural Revolution. This poor 12 year-old girl had to pull an all-nighter at school to finish a portrait of Chairman Mao in millet seeds before some big political rally. This Hello Kitty piece is fairly lame besides the Pee Wee Herman portrait, which had a sort of gleam in its eye. Sadly the Chairman Mao portrait is lost to us (but the beleaguered young artist still has the tortured memories). Crop art is not really that obscure. Remember “PeeWee’s Playhouse”?
